empowering our community through food-based opportunities in the Alabama Black Belt

Black Belt Food Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit initiative dedicated to creating a stronger, more inclusive environment for residents of Alabama’s rural Black Belt region by providing opportunities for growth, nourishment, and connection through positive food experiences.

What do we do for our community?

  • We helped start a community farmers market in downtown Greensboro in 2024 and the first season was a HUGE success. But, due to capacity issues, we are unable to continue running the market, which has been passed on to another local organization who plans to keep it running.

  • We provide sit down meals in a restaurant at no cost for those in need using rescued food items from grocery stores, farms, and farmers markets. The menu is crafted by regional chefs and features wholesome dishes. Diners get a real restaurant experience, breaking down barriers between socioeconomic groups in the area.

  • We partner with the organic farm at Rural Studio in Newbern, AL, to provide fresh, locally grown produce to our residents on a “take what you need, leave what you can” system. We are working to build meal prep programs centered around our seasonal produce options.

  • A two-day food focused community event centered around our regional food system where we highlight farmers and producers, chefs, and educators within the food sector by providing hands-on programming and presentations at no cost to our community twice a year. All participants are fed a meal crafted by regional chefs.
